WHAT HOPE FOR THE NIGERIAN
In 1979, Bamanga Tukur was the
Governor of the defunct Gongola State (now Adamawa & Taraba) and
today, 33 years after, he is the Chairman of the ruling Party, The PDP.
In 1979 too, Dr. Bello Halliru was a commissioner in the Old Sokoto
State (now Sokoto, Kebbi & Zamfara) and today, 33 years after, he
served as the Minister of Defence. General David Mark (rtd) was the
military governor of Niger State in 1984 and today, 28 years after, he
is the Senate President. Murtala Nyako was the military Governor of
Niger State in 1976 and today, 36 years after, he is the Governor of
Adamawa State. Ogbonnaya Onu was governor of Abia State in 1992 and
today, 20 years after, he is the National Chairman of ANPP. Group
Captain David Jonah Jang (Rtd), was the governor of Benue State in 1985
and 27 years after, he is today the governor of plateau state. Martins
Elechi the Ebonyi State Governor is over 80 years old and still "too
young" to retire! Only in Nigeria is this possible!! Where then lies the
hope of the youth of today and where does their future begin? Where do
we go from here?
In 1985 at the age of 44, IBB became president
of Nigeria and our teachers told us that Buhari then became "former"
Head of State. Our teachers also called us the leaders of tomorrow. 27
years after, IBB and Buhari are still contesting for President of
Nigeria. Its either our teachers lied to us about being the leaders of
tomorrow or tomorrow is yet to come. The question then is: who's fooling
who?. Whatever your answer is, one thing is certain: If we don't rise
up and fight for our rights we must be sure that this suppression and
oppression will continue in perpetuity. If we are the "leaders of
tomorrow" then we must today define what that tomorrow means and when it
should begin. We must take cognisance of the fact that in life you
don't get what you deserve, you only get what you NEGOTIATE. And
negotiation takes various forms and is subject to anyone's definition.
Ronald
Reagan, former US President once said "Freedom has no grandchildren;
every generation fights for its liberty." The liberty we seek will NEVER
be given voluntarily to us unless we "NEGOTIATE" it! Today they accuse
the youth of not being "prepared" for leadership; of not being
"knowledgeable" enough for the complexities of leadership. They enjoyed
the very best of education that this nation ever had to offer, but today
they've killed it and turned around to accuse us of not learning. They
had the best of Nigeria's healthcare system but today there is no
Panadol in our cemetery-like General Hospitals. Jobs awaited them as
they exited the Ivory Towers after an all-expenses-paid learning. Today
we wait Ten Years plus after a tortuous, self-sponsored, hard earned
P.hd to be considered for the job of a Truck driver in Dangote.
Fellow
Citizens, you don't push a man down and then accuse him of living in
dirt; you don't strip a man of his clothes and accuse him of being
naked. But that is what our country and its present crop of lying and
thieving leaders are doing to us. In 2008 in Lokoja, Kogi State - and
this I witnessed personally, a young man of about 22 Years stole a loaf
of bread from a stand on the street. He tore off the nylon casing and
was biting and swallowing the bread as he was being pursued, knowing he
would be caught and beaten, but such beating would be better endured
with "something in his stomach". Sure enough he was caught, and beaten,
and handed over to the Police. As I write this, that young man is still
in Lokoja Prisons, AWAITING TRIAL!!! But a man steals 27 BILLION NAIRA
of pension funds, pleads guilty and is given a two year jail term or an
OPTION of N750,000 fine which he pays from his back pocket. Simply put,
the man is told, "go and enjoy your loot." But that boy who stole a loaf
of bread in 2008 is still awaiting trial, Five years after!
This
week, the president and his Governors shared ONE BILLION DOLLARS of the
Excess Crude Account to enable them "consolidate on vital projects for
the benefit of the people." But note this, and note carefully, by next
week when the money hits their accounts, you will notice an upsurge in
foreign trips by the governors and other Government officials.
For
how long shall we continue like this? My answer? For as long as we the
people remain docile, complacent, mediocre and silent. And here I again
recall the words of another US President, one of the world's greatest
men, Abraham Lincoln, who once said "to sin by silence when they should
protest makes cowards of men." Obviously, a great number of us reading
this feel oppressed but helpless, not knowing what we have. But I tell
you, the greatest weapon in the hand of the oppressed is the MIND of the
oppressed. Use it. Without this, we won't have the Nigeria of our
dreams.

ALL IN THE NAME OF BUDGETING
ALL IN THE NAME OF BUDGETING
TO: You + 1 More
Our Constitutions and laws envisage the sovereignty of the people from
whom government derives. All its powers and authority. The security
and welfare of the people are declared to be the primary purpose of
government. By the respective oaths of office of the President,
Vice-President and members of the National Assembly, they swore to
discharge their duties to the best of their abilities in the interest
of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well being and prosperity
of the country. They also swore to preserve the Fundamental Objective
and Directive Principles of State Policy which contains the welfare
provisions for the common good of all Nigerians. The President and
Vice president further swore not to allow their personal interest to
influence official conduct and decisions. And the National Assembly is
specifically charged with making laws for peace, order and good
Governance of the Federation.
With the recently approved 2012 budget as a compass, let us examine
how the executive and legislature arms of goverment at the Federal
level have fared in living up to their oath of office. As a prelude,
it is imperative to recall that when the budget was presented to the
National Assembly, Nigerians of all shades of opinion took time to
point out expenditure proposals that were frivolous and contributed
nothing to the public good but enrichment of a few people in Office.
Nigerians were also quick to insist that with the grinding poverty
ravaging the country, there was no need for ostentatious living by
public officials when those they claim to lead are dying of hunger and
disease. But what did we get in return? The budget was approved by the
legislature and signed into law by the president with many of those
issues we complained of intact. Apparently, our views as Nigerians do
not matter to these men and women in power. Their mindset is simple -
you can make your noise but we will have our way.
First, the National Assembly awarded itself N150bn without any
details known to the public on how it is going to be spent. Can the
legislature come clean with the details? Of course, the members are
not interested. Merely stating that the budget of the National
Assembly is now part of statutory transfers provides no cover for lump
sum budgeting. Can any member of the National Assembly show me the
provision of any law or the constitution backing this abuse of
appropriation of powers? How can the purported representatives of the
people be operating a budget whose content is unknown to those they
represent?
Then the Presidency(State House and Office of the Vice President) took
off from there and got N805.8m for food stuff and supplies,
refreshment and meals and another N481.2m for welfare. Suffice to say
that the line item called "welfare" is illegal and unknown to the
Nigerian Law. It is a wasteful expenditure and contributes nothing to
the security and welfare of the people. The welfare of the president
and the members of staff of the State House are already provided in
their personal expenditure and other perks of office. Acting on this
prompting, other Ministries, Departments and Agencies hve generous
provision for welfare and this is in excess of 2.5bn For the
presidency, maintenance of vehicles, generators, furniture, IT
equipment, office and residential buildings will cost N2.485bn.
Replacement of 1,000 sets of crested wares(plates) is to cost N356.7m.
Other priorities of the Presidency include aquisition, upgrading and
furnishing of the VP lounge at Aguda House in the sum of N207.1m. Over
N162m is to be used for watering of lawns and landscaping.
Taking a cue from the above, the Ministry of Finance anchored by the
'celebrated' coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo
Iweala, took N311.8m for welfare packages; N260.9m for refreshment and
meals; and N84.9m for security vote. Restaurant and fast food chains
will be green with envy on these budgets for refreshment and meals
while a security vote for the ministry beats all imagination. This
security vote is not part of the humongous budgetary security
expenses, N900bn, which Nigerians thought was on the high side.
Security votes have been serially abused and are still open to abuse
because they are not subject to the normal channels of accountability.
Cleaning and fumigation will cost the same Ministry over N70m in 2012.
Not to be outdone, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources has over N126m
as spectacle advances, what ever that means.
In many MDAs, after provisions have been made for payments to the
National Health Insurance Fund, there are subsequent provisions for
drugs and medical supplies and medical expenses. The budget of the
office of the Head of service is a typical demonstration of this
anomaly. Further, the head of service has N80m for the development of
a roadmap for the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act!
What does the development of a roadmap entail? When did the Head of
service become a fan or supporter of the Freedom of Information
process? This is the same bureaucracy and establishment that fought
the enactment of the FOIA to a standstill for over 20years.
With this trend of appropriation, it is clear that the executive and
the legislatives have allowed their personal interests to influence
their official conduct and decisions. They have placed self over and
above the rights of Nigerians to survive and lead a life of dignity.
This trend of appropriation denigrates the sovereignty, integrity,
solidarity,well-being and prosperity of the country. Nigerians are
becoming more impoverished while their leaders are engaging in more
ostentatious. And conspicuous consumption. When you translate the
above figures appropriated for selfish reasons into a new classroom,
litres of clean water, new mega watts of electricity delivered to our
homes, kilometers of smooth tarred road, quality drugs in our
hospitals, it will be clear that the people have been systematically
shortchanged in the name of appropriation.
In the Ministry of Water Resources, billion of naira have been
appropriated for the construction of solar powered, motorised and
ordinary boreholes and street lights. There appears to be no
evidenced-based costing of the bore holes. While some come as cheap as
3m, others range from N10m, N15m to N30m per bore hole.
Some votes are meant to be deliberately misleading, for instance:
Motorised Borehole in Abi/Yakurr Federal constituency, Cross River
State for N30m. The question is ; how many boreholes and in what
location? In another instance in the Anambra| Imo River. Basin
Development Authority, there are provisions for small Scale Minor
Irrigation Project and small Dam programme in the sum of N105.8m and
88.5m respectively. There are no details and locations - a good
background for the money to disappear into thin air. This is
suspicious vote because detailed provisions with location have been
made for other small scale minor irrigation projects and small earth
dams.
Our budgets will continue this way If we do not challenge these
obvious wrongs. The power of appropriation should not be exercised to
the detriment of the majority, albeit long suffering and silent. Now
is the time to end this silence and for once, end the culture of
fiscal impunity.

AMBASSADOR FEMI KUTI GETS ANOTHER GRAMMY AWARD NOMINATION
Afrobeat maestro, Femi Kuti, has been nominated for the 52nd edition of the Grammy Awards under the ‘Best Contempo-rary World Music Album’ category for his ‘Day by Day’ album.
Femi is currently signed to Mercer Street Records alongside his compatriot Asa. This is Femi’s second Grammy nomination.
Kuti, 47, is the first son of late Afrobeat creator, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.Thenetng reported yesterday that he is in contention with Amadou & Mariam, Bella Fleck, Oumou Sangare and Omar Sosar for the World music category.
Femi is one of the most remarkable performers from the African continent and has built a steady career since forming his positive force band over two decades ago.
His first Grammy nomination was in 2003 – for the critically-acclaimed album, Fight to Win. He lost the prize to Ruben blade from Mundo.
Nominees for the 2010 Grammy were announced , amidst performances on broadcast partners, CBS Network.Singer Beyonce leads the pack with a whopping 10 nods while Taylor Swift, who has had an interesting and eventful year, follows with eight nominations. Kanye West got six (all for his works with other artistes) while rave act Lady Gaga earned five nods.
Sunny Ade and Femi kuti are the only indigenous Nigerians to have been nominated for the Grammy’s.
Nigerian-born artistes who have won the award in the past are Helen Folasade Adu (who first achieved the success in the 1980s as the frontwoman and lead vocalist of the popular Brit and Grammy Award winning English group) and Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel (who was born on February 19, 1963 in Paddington London). Both are British citizens.
Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose” won a Grammy Award for Record of the year, Song of the Year in 1996, becoming his best performing single on the market.
Kuti was born June 16, 1962 and is an award-winning Nigerian musician and the oldest son of legendary afrobeat pioneer Fela.
He was born in London to Fela and Remi Kuti and grew up in Lagos. His mother soon left his father, taking Femi to live with her. In 1977, though, Femi chose to move in with his father. Femi eventually became a member of his father’s band.
Like his father, Femi has shown a strong commitment to social and political causes throughout his career, but he differs from his father in his religious views.
According to Wikipedia, in 2001, Femi collaborated on his album Fight to Win with a number of U.S. musicians, such as Common, Mos Def, and Jaguar Wright.
In 2002, Femi’s mother, who had played an influential role in Femi’s life, died at the age of 60. Femi’s 12-year-old son currently appears as part of his act, playing alto saxophone.
Femi’s voice is featured in the videogame Grand Theft Auto IV where he is the host of radio station IF 99 (International Funk 99, described as “playing a great selection of classics from West Africa, the US and elsewhere”).---By Paul Ohia

FELABRATION 2009: THE BLACK PRESIDENT
The stage at the New Africa Shrine looks so tame and innocent. It would surprise anyone who had been there. For a whole week, that stage was easily the hottest stage in all of Africa. The walls of the establishment were bursting at the seams and each successive performance threatened to blow the roof off the building.
The celebrations kicked off with a symposium, debate and interactive question and answer session which hosted entertainment mogul, Mr Ben Bruce, erstwhile politician and past governor of Cross River state, Mr Donald Duke, spokesperson for the Kuti family and debate moderator, Mrs Yemisi Ransome Kuti. The session also included Mr Idowu Mabinuori and renowned poet and writer, Mr Odia Ofeimun. Also present was the Boss of the NDLEA, Mr Iweajunwa. Each speaker on relevant societal issues which Fela had adressed
For the second year running, Felabration lent its support to the total eradication of poverty Stand up, Take Action.
The artiste line up is surely the longest that Nigeria has seen at any concert in her history. Tuesday saw the show kicking off in full steam. Apart from being quite lenghty, it was also populated by superstars on a galactic level. There were perfomances by King Sunny Ade, Fatai Rolling Dollars, Seun Kuti and Fela's Egypt 80, Lagbaja, Gangbe Brass Band, Wierd Mc, Aduni and Nefertiti, Nneka, Muma Gee, Pasuma, Sir shina Peters, Tunde and Wunmi Obe, Dele Taiwo, Kel, Sasha, Timaya, Terry G, Oritsefemi, Bigiano, Duro Ikujenyo, Nija sings runners up and winner, Da Grin, Konga, Sound Sultan and Baba Dee, Dj Vinnie, Dj Neptune, Wande Coal and The Prince, The Pulse, amongst so many performers.
The finale was surely one for the record books. Femi Kuti and Positive Force actually seemed to bring the spirit of Fela back to life. The crowd swayed and danced to the scyntilating rythms that pervaded the hall. Terry G who had the fans sweating it out in suspense was on hand to close the event. For most fans, nothing short of what they had seen,
But to move on from the razmatazz of the concert and it humongous superstar roll call, what has been the impact of Fela on this new generation of Nigerians? What are the effects that his showmanship, political ideology and philosophy have on the so called new democracy that Nigeria claims to run? What great good will this volatile fusion of music, politics and hero worship do for the generations to come? I guess we all just have to wait and see but surely from the writer's point of view, Fela truly does carry death in his pocket because from all indications world wide, Anikulapo is bigger, better, and truly a Legend ---TBLACK

Felabration 2009 which takes place in October is tagged “The Black President” coinciding with the year America elected its first black president. This name was also a tribute to Fela during and after his lifetime. As an Afro beat Maestro, Poet, Philosopher and Social Critic, Fela became a hero to many. Felabration 2009 will be celebrating his ideologies and his contribution the Nigerian society through his political ideology, social emancipation and empowerment of Nigerians and the black race as a whole. I guess we all just have to wait and see but surely from the writer's point of view, Fela truly does carry death in his pocket because from all indications world wide, Anikulapo is bigger, better, and truly a Legend ---TBLACK

3 Minutes, 2 Players, 1 Ball and The Whole World Red Bull Street Style is an introduction to a unique sport for all Soccer Players around the world. With a strong focus on today’s younger players, freestyle soccer carries some key developmental aspects to the game of Soccer. Individual creativity is vital. The selection process at the country elimination contests may vary, but the rules for the final are set.3 minutes, 2 players, 1 ball: In each “battle”, two players square off in a one-on-one duel against each other. They take alternating 20-second turns with the ball, using their time to show-off the best of their artistic moves to the sounds of break-dance and hip-hop music.
In the finals, the judges will be evaluating the three minutes flow based on control, creativity and style. The winner advances to the next round. There are no limits; other than the standard prohibition on the use of hands and a requirement that the ball and performer stay within a 7-metre wide (27-foot) competition area. The Winner will be the person who does the best tricks using imagination, balance and athletic moves while keeping control with the soccer ball. Great ball control is essential. Creativity and stylish finesse are vital for success.
In 2007 Red Bull Reaccion offered a platform for most talented ball artists in South America. Red Bull Street Style now opens the stage for Nigeria’s youngsters to showcase and battle. Qualifications took place in different regions within Nigeria, starting in Benin (28, 29 & 31 May), Kano (2 & 3 June), Abuja (4, 5 & 6 June), ending in Lagos (8, 9 & 10 June).
Top Winners of each qualification competed against each other in the finals in Lagos on June 13.Using the rules of the game, the event was held with a panel of three judges looking for the following elements: control/technical skills, style and creativity. Besides having a very competitive event, there was a top DJ playing variety of music to encourage the athletes to perform best football tricks. Music plays a very important role as it reflects the game’s culture.
